"Fe-Si alloys extraction via carbothermal reduction of lunar regolith" - Singh et al (2026)

Alan Duffy

LUNAR STEEL! This is an amazing study undertaken by Dr Surya Singh as part of his PhD at Swinburne led by Prof Geoff Brooks, exploring the conditions under which the soil (aka regolith) of the Moon can be processed to access the iron it contains for potential use on the Lunar surface.

This amazing example of high-end simulation and in-lab experimentation (under similar conditions of the Moon, albeit not quite as extreme!) was made possible by the great team led by Geoff at the Extraterrestrial Resource Processing group of the Space Technology and Industry Institute and the Robert Simpson High Temperature Laboratory for those incredible tests.
