Professor Duffy!
Alan Duffy
Just received news from the Swinburne University of Technology promotions panel - I am now a full PROFESSOR!
Particularly pleasing in this (and the reason I want to ask your indulgence in this scandalous self-promotion) is that the promotion committee considered the entire range of my research, teaching and engagement. Swinburne truly is a place that has supported my full range of activities and values the research papers I write just as much as the science discoveries I explain to the community.
My enormous thanks to all my colleagues (esp for those clearly overly generous references!) and particularly my students, it’s only in collaboration with you all have I achieved the work to receive this recognition.
A decade ago I received my PhD, and even after that point I never considered myself good / smart enough to have a career in astronomy, let alone become a full Professor of Astronomy! If there’s a lesson in this, make sure you find a path that aligns with your values and interests so you can enjoy it no matter how you proceed career-wise, and then of course don’t listen to that imposter syndrome voice in your head that says you can’t be good enough. Check out the expansive article by Hive on imposter syndrome too.
Trust me, if I can make it to Professor you can do anything. Good luck on striving and hopefully one day soon attaining your goals!
