Proud (co!)supervisor moment
Alan Duffy
Proud (co!)supervisor moment here with 3 incredible students graduating across a range of disciplines…
With his Thesis “Responsible AI in Space: Regulating AI in the Final Frontier” Dr Thomas Graham explored the use of automation and AI techniques in the unique environment of space - from a regulatory/legal framework that combined insights gained from interviewing cutting edge industry, academic, and government authorities on the reality and intentions for AI in space.
A very different research topic from Dr Renee Key with her Thesis on “Determining the Density of Primordial Black Holes as Dark Matter via Microlensing” that leverages Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and the magnifying glass-like enhancement of a background star’s brightness by the intervening passage of a dense body - in this case the hypothesised dark matter candidate popularised by Stephan Hawking (black holes from the beginning of the universe).
Last but very much not least “Hiding in the Dust: Signatures of Cold and Warm Dark Matter in the Dust Properties of Cosmological Simulations by Dr Adam Ussing in which he used Swinburne University of Technology’s OZStar supercomputer and the latest galaxy formation software to generate model universes with differing ideas of the properties of the Dark Matter and then testing whether they predict different observable consequences that can be searched for by telescopes, in this case… dust!
My enormous congratulations to them all for achieving this incredible success and persevering through immense challenges as creating new and original knowledge that advances humanity’s collective understanding of the cosmos is no small feat.
I would also like to highlight and thank their supervisors for their commitment and years of contributions (in order) for Tom - Mirko Bagaric, Anthony McCosker, Joanna Bryson, Jack White, PhD, Jon Whittle; for Renee - Ned Taylor, Anais Möller, Jeremy Mould, Ken Freeman - and for Adam - Darren Croton, Robert Adriel Mostoghiu Paun
Congratulations once again Doctors :)
