"Muon event localisation with AI" - Heredge et al (2021)
Alan Duffy
This paper was a delight to write, with two young scientists (Jamie Heredge and Jay Archer) undertaking an incredible amount of work to generate muon events with Geant4 passing through a model of a plastic scintillator, and demonstrating that AI can recover the potential intersection of that event better than an analytic model. Although very much a theoretical investigation, with reality likely much more challenging to reconstruct, it does show that muon detection can be considered anew using AI to drive performance beyond that limits of traditional efforts - it also shows that these two students have a great future ahead in their own research careers!
