Australia to host dark matter detector
Alan Duffy
As a Co-Investigator on SABRE (the world's first dark matter detector in the southern hemisphere) I was over the moon when we got the State and Federal funding to create the site for it at SUPL (Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory) at the bottom of a goldmine in Victoria. With this $3.5m we can now expect to search for dark matter within 18 months! To celebrate we hosted VIPs from the world of science and politics on a tour underground to where we will build the detector. That rock above us will shield it from radiation from space allowing only the ghost-like dark matter to reach the detector. We also had a film crew from Channel 7's Sunrise Weekend which was great to publicise the early stages of this international endeavour!
